Paint Parties: An Invitation to Experience Life
People often say they "need an escape"—an escape from work, from stress, from the endless notifications, responsibilities, and to-do lists that seem to follow us everywhere.
I understand exactly what they mean. Life gets busy, and sometimes we all need something to look forward to.
But the more I've thought about it, the more I've realized that's not really what happens at a TJ's Paint Parties event.
Yes, for a couple of hours, the emails can wait. The dishes will still be there when you get home. Tomorrow's meeting isn't asking for your attention. Instead, you're sitting with a paintbrush in your hand, laughing with people around you, trying something new, and maybe surprising yourself with what you're capable of creating.
To someone watching from the outside, that might look like an escape, but I think it's actually the opposite - it's choosing to be fully present in a moment that you could have easily talked yourself out of.
Somewhere along the way, many of us started believing that fun has to be earned. We'll go do something once work calms down, or once the house is clean .. or when the kids are older. Once we have a little more money, or when life isn’t so hectic.
The problem is, life has a funny way of filling every bit of space we give it. There's always another errand, another email, another responsibility waiting around the corner - but, if we keep waiting for the perfect time to enjoy life, we may find ourselves waiting for a very long time.
The memories that stay with us usually aren't the result of everything finally being "done." They're the moments we decided to say yes anyway. Maybe it was your first paint party, or maybe it was a spontaneous friends night out, a date night, a birthday celebration, or a family reunion. Maybe you were on vacation and wanted to try something different. Or maybe you just saw an event and thought, "That sounds like fun." Those experiences don't replace life, they become part of it.
One of my favorite things to witness is watching someone walk in saying, "I can't paint," and then seeing the smile on their face two hours later as they hold up a painting they never imagined they could create.
Sure, they leave with a “masterpiece”, but they also leave with a little more confidence, feeling inspired, happy memories, and a fun story to share … and maybe even a reminder that trying something new isn't nearly as scary as they thought.
And that's why I've never believed paint parties are really about painting - they're about making room for experiences that remind us we're alive. They're about slowing down long enough to notice the conversation happening across the table, laughing when someone accidentally dips their brush into the wrong color (or into their drink!), encouraging the person beside you who's convinced they're "doing it wrong," and realizing there was never a wrong way to enjoy the experience in the first place.
Whether you're celebrating something special or simply looking for a different way to spend an afternoon, my hope is that you leave with more than a finished painting. I hope you leave feeling a little lighter, a little more connected, and reminded that joy doesn't always have to wait for some future version of life when everything is finally in order.
Sometimes, joy looks like paint on your hands, music in the background, and two hours spent creating something you'll always remember. That's not you escaping life, that’s you fully experiencing it.
